Making the Jump to Wyndham

Words by Jessica Cusmano

Growth in Wyndham dates back from the 1830’s when graziers discovered a great opportunity in the area, moving into Werribee, Little River, Tarneit, Truganina and Point Cook. By the 1850’s Central Werribee was becoming a village as rural consolidation was occurring in Wyndham, with many large land prospects developing.
An increase in population occurred in the township throughout out the remaining decades of the nineteenth century. In 1914 the Point Cook RAFF based opened as a Central Flying School. After World War One Werribee South was divided up and taken up by soldier settlers, this helped develop the market gardening economy that survives to this day.
From the 1960’s after the Second World War majority of the residential growth in Wyndham occurred. In 1963 the first subdivision in Hoppers Crossing took place and important residential growth has happened in many areas of the City through to the current housing expansion in Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina and Wyndham Vale.

So why are so many people moving to Wyndham?

In 1996 there were 76,239 residents living in the Wyndham area, compare that to 2006 where a massive 122,574 residents settled in. So why are people making the jump to wyndham? Simply because the area has excelled over the last few years with modern estates opening, more local shopping facilities, new fashion shops moving into the local shopping centre, a variety of quality restaurants, bars and café’s. Entertainment and leisure is so central with cinemas, Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre, Wyndham Library Services, gyms, parks and much more.
