Newport Lakes Native Nursery
Located within an urban oasis in the industrial heart of Melbourne.
The nursery specialises in Indigenous Plants of Melbourne‘s Western Basalt Plains, which is the original flora of this region prior to European settlement.
The Western Basalt Plains is regarded as an endangered ecosystem due to the development of industry and the continuing urban sprawl. There is less than 0.1% of grasslands remaining, so why not consider planting in your own garden, a piece of Victorian history which otherwise could be lost forever!
We aim to reveal the unique beauty, diversity and significance of this endangered ecosystem by specialising in species related to grasslands such as grasses and sedges, bulbs and lilies, wildflowers, shrubs, trees, groundcovers and even aquatic plants suitable for ponds, dams or wet spots.
Why use indigenous plants?
Unlike “Exotic” plants, indigenous plants are tough as they have adapted to our local weather patterns and soil conditions.
Indigenous plants are low in maintenance, have low water needs (drought resistant), do not require imported soils and rarely require fertilizing.
